The Yunnan Provincial Higher People's Court in southwest China on October 14 conducted a retrial of Sun Xiaoguo, a released convict of multiple crimes and suspect of an organized crime case that gained wide attention.

Sun was retried on October 14 for rape, insulting women by forcible means, intentionally inflicting injury upon others and creating disturbances.

Sun was found guilty of the same crimes and sentenced to death in 1998, but finally received 20 years of imprisonment after a retrial in 2007. He was released in 2010 after several reductions in his sentence, serving only 12 years and five months in prison.

In July, the Yunnan Provincial Higher People's Court decided that the verdict in 2007 was incorrect and the case should be reheard.

Several lawmakers, political advisors, journalists and members of the public attended the open session of the trial on October 14, where Sun was tried for creating disturbances. For crimes of rape, insulting women by forcible means and intentionally inflicting injury upon others, Sun's case was heard in a private session for privacy concerns.

The verdict will be announced at a later date, according to the court.

Sun also faces charges over crimes he is suspected of committing after his release from prison in 2010. Prosecutors in the city of Yuxi in Yunnan Province have filed an indictment against Sun and the other 12 suspects for multiple crimes including organizing, leading and participating in mafia-natured organizations.

A total of 13 people, including those closely related to Sun's cases and civil servants involved in the cases, have been transferred by provincial supervisory organs to the prosecutors for review and indictment for duty-related crimes. The other six have already been indicted.
